The vision to computerize Boys' Track and Field records and compile an all-time Top 10 database
for each event began with Gary Swetland. Beginning in 1987, Coach Swetland
kept meticulous statistics on every track meet. Over time, he added his information to that of past coaches, yearbooks,
and old Times Herald articles.
Further research was conducted by Jimmy Reynolds, starting in 2000. They discovered
that alot of data was missing from before 1987. New head coach Larry Welty
continues to keep tight records, and the quest to unearth old times from bygone days continues. We appreciate any
help, so post a note in Study Hall or send an email to the webmasters in the Main Office.
1979: The Greatest Track Team in Portville History

|
|
| 1979 PCS TRACK TEAM Coach Rick Wilson |
Portville has been a track and field powerhouse since Jazz Peterson set the state record
in the 400 yard dash in 1932. Earl Fuller coached the boys' team for 27 years during the 50s through the 70s, when Bob
Connell took over with his modern innovations.
Coach Swetland's teams of the 90s were the most dominant of all, putting together 120 straight
victories in conference dual meets, and producing a number of current record-holders.
The 1979 boys' track team was not bad either. They set 8 school records (scroll down),
and the seniors accumulated a 35-2 record over 3 years of varsity competition, winning meets and special events throughout
the Southern Tier.
Enjoy a stroll through the articles and pictures from the '79 season plus other years.
Over time, we will be adding photos and articles from as many years as possible, so check back for updates.
